The former imperial seat of government is a sprawling complex of temples, pavilions, moats, walls and gates. It was badly damaged in 1968 during the Tet Offensive when it was shelled by the Viet Cong and then bombed by the Americans. Restoration has been slowly taking place for 20 years but has a long way to go.
