Running water was brought to the old city of Caesarea, along a raised aqueduct from the springs of Shummi on the southern side of Mount Carmel, 10KM away. Herod build the aqueduct in the 1st century BCE and over time it was expanded and repaired while supplying water to Caesaria for 1200 years before it was abandoned.
Much of the original aqueduct has been exposed and is easily accessible from the beach in modern Caesaria, but a short walk north along the beach will take you to that area where the sand dunes seem determined to cover over the engineering marvel created so long ago.
